Random Tangent: Punk Rock Needs to Give Up On Life

Sorry, I know this is a bit random, but I'm sick and tired of seeing people who complain about music and how there is no real punk rock anymore. I for one am very happy there is no "real" punk rock left in the world. I would also be very happy if the new wave punk rock would die with it. Now don't get me wrong, some bands pull of the punk with a twist quite decently. Mohawks, leather jackets, and massive metal and tattoos covering your body does not make you cool, or give you elite status within our culture.

I just never understood the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Songs like "I Want to be Sedated" just annoy the shit out of me. All their voices blow, they barely play anything resembling music, and people think it's "real" music. Maybe it is/was a lifestyle thing? Any punk kid I see today just looks like he needs a good slap, and maybe a few doses of real life to figure out that if he keeps up the path he is on, he is going to be a very sad person come the later years (if he doesn't off himself before then).

I know, I know, it's a bit harsh, but fuck it. I don't want to have to listen to them bitch and moan about how the glory days of music are gone. They seem to put any music that isn't fast or hard in the emo genre. I'm sure if I sat down an old Punk Rocker and played him Sigur Ros or The Album Leaf, he'd bitch about how there's no soul or something, and it's emo sissy shit. Then I'd have to kill him, err or at least bludgeon him till his brain starts functioning properly.

That's all I got. I just wanted to tell the "Real" Punk Rockers to go F themselves, and find music that actually resembles music.

That's a Cramps album title. Just because I like bad music, doesn't mean I don't like good music. I love Sigur Ros AND Septic Death, so I don't think you really know any real punk rockers.
Bringing up the lip ring and forearm tattoo is so off topic that it makes you look like a poser. I have a whole body full of tattoos but can still wear a short sleeved shirt without anybody seeing them. Putting your first one on your forearm is a poser move. That's where they go when you have no other room.

You sound like an emo fag.

emo

your haircut is emo. you should cut yourself. starting with your head. cut it off.

Hey look responses. You all need to calm down. I respect punk in the degree that it was a movement and all, but musically, it's just bad...in my opinion.

Emo is a whole other topic of bad music. And I don't think I ever said all people that listen to punk have horrible taste in music, I was just going off on the punk group that did insult all other forms of music and lump them into the emo group. This was kind of a "see how it feels" piece. Obviously it has worked to some extent.

As for poser tattoo, you think whatever you want. I got because I wanted to, I mostly wear hoodies and shit anyway, so it's not like I'm trying to flaunt it and act hardcore. I have zero problem with tats, just don't think your this unique person because you have them.

I don't think you know what it is.
No, it's not the Sex Pistols or Ramones, and no, they didn't start it.
No, it's not really a style of music, and by the time someone declared "punk" a style, the "punk rockers" were already playing new wave and no wave, hardcore and goth, groove metal and industrial, and an assortment of styles all thrown together and called "indie".

Would you consider Lou Reed, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Ween, Pixies, or Melvins to be "punk"?

What does a Dada painting look like?

Micah's picture

mmm I don't know what you are saying here, but ok....and no I don't consider any of those bands strictly punk.

And I'm curious as to who did start the punk movement if not the Sex Pistols and the Ramones....if you try to pull some shit like saying it was The Who or something crazy like that, I have nothing to say to you.

The first big mover was the clash. You know, "Should I stay or should I go?"

but elements were cropping up much earlier...the Clash was just one of the first if not the first to be recognized as Punk.

Then eventually came Green day who started Prep Punk, which was followed by Blink-182, Relient K and Sum-41. Also, there is Rise Against and The Offspring that kept the more hardcore idea going...

what a stoopit fuck. (yes, I misspelled it on purpose). there IS NO PUNK ROCK....it was over back in 1981 or whatever. you weren't suppose to be able to play your instrument or sing well...it was about EMPOWERMENT.
dumbass kid......all you kids are just about a bunch of snot swallowing, mouth breathing, texting, Facebook, video playing twerps who are going to grow up just like your parents....stoopit, clueless, materialistic and brain dead.

What do you think of that asshat?

Now THATS punk.

Dumbass.

I also don't condone poor spelling.

"I have zero problem with tats, just don't think your this unique person because you have them."

your != you're

Micah's picture

I don't exactly proof read my comments when I write them, however in comparison to the fool that I made that comment to, I think my spelling is immaculate.

I guarantee that the punk kid you slap will kick your emo fancy lad ass, while the "real" punk rockers gang bang your mother to some good ol' punk rock. She will like it and you will not because your emo, and emos don;t like anything.

Micah's picture

you guys are just reinforcing my point. everything is emo, and punk rock is just so much harder than everything. get the fuck over yourselves. The only worthwhile response was from the anonymous "Bad Music for Bad People", though he called me a poser, even still, I respect what he had to say unlike the emo babble you guys keep spitting up.

Harry's picture

Someone should point out how emo you are.

come on, man. he's wearing headphones in his pic. he's obviously an expert on music.

100% agree with you

People in the comments need to calm down. Let the man express his opinion. If you don't like it, don't visit...

The essence is that you probably do not feel the world of that period when this music was made, every generation has it's own feeling of the world. This feeling is mostly imprinted in the adolescent years and most people will keep that particular view on the world by the events that shaped them during these years. Punks and their generation are the rebellious kids of the babyboomer generation, we despise the brainless consumerism and enabling of corporate interests that the babyboomer generation caused on this world. The music we choose to is as ugly as the message we tell, beautiful music does not belong to a angry generation like mine. And believe me, we are really the angry, cynical and aggressive generation, you think that the current generation of politicians are bad, wait until my generation becomes dominant in politics, then you will see what destruction really means.
The music we love should warn you!!

heh

I will admit that the "new punk" doesn't do it for me even though it was spawned in my generation. For one moment however, I would ask all of the "real punks" to stop whining and get over it. There will always be imitations of the things that shake society. So stop bitching about it and be glad that your message WAS heard (even if it did become diluted by the next generation). Every generation tries to raise its voice to the ones that came before it; not all of them succeed.

I'm 35 and started going to shows in 1987. My first show was Operation Ivy and ALL, formerly the Descendents, now the Descendents again. I just think people are influenced by their time and place, friends, etc. I started skating when I was 13 and we were all into the Sex Pistols, Sham 69, Misfits, Descendents, Surf Punks, DK, etc.

I can't put on the Dead Kennedys or Crucifucks now and listen to them over and over again like I once did, but I still appreciate them. I wouldn't get mad at this kid for saying what he's saying.

My take is you should like music with soul, whether it's the Shout Out Louds, Al Green, The Kinks, Bach or the Bad Brains. Just find good music with soul.

I was all "if it's not punk it sucks" back in the day and I missed out on a lot of good music. What a mistake. True music lovers keep a critical, but open mind.

I encourage you (blogger) to take another listen to some of those bands though, you might find something you like. I suggest Rites of Spring, Samiam, Jawbreaker, Shudder to Think. Not hardcore, but the precursor to a lot of what it sounds like you like.

Best,

Jawbreaker are fucking astounding. To this day I can still listen to their entire catalog and not have to skip one song. Maybe try some Built to Spill as well. But mostly Jawbreaker...

And for there record, emo died right where it was born.. in Chapel Hill about 30 seconds after the word was uttered.

n/m

spoken like a true 50 year old, don't you have some kids you need to tell to get off of your lawn?

emo douchebag

Micah's picture

yes yes keep it up. makes me smile. and that is very rare since I am so emo.

OMG CUT UR SELF MOAR PLX

This guy doesn't even know what the fuck punk is, and neither do the dorks he's talking to who say that "punk is dead". Fuck, son, punk was dead as soon as anyone said anything was "punk".

Punks fucking smell
And they're all fucking posers who just listen to the music because they're friends do and want to get high and wasted all the time
fags
shows are lame too

WOLF IS BULLSHIT!@!!1

Punk died when they started using "Lust For Life" to plug a cruise liner...

But that being said... "I Wanna Be Sedated" kicked ass on the first Guitar Hero.
